Why Children Need Movement Education Alongside Exercise By Adinath Naik, Founder, Athletots
When parents ask me about a sports class, they often want to know how much running their child will do. They want their child to be active, and I understand that. But I also want to know what the child will learn. Can they stop after running? Balance while reaching? Catch a ball? Jump and stay steady when they land? Movement education helps children practise these skills through play and suitable challenges. Tiredness alone does not tell us what a child has learned.
What movement education means
Think of movement skills as an alphabet. Running, jumping, balancing, throwing and catching are individual letters. Sports combine them in different ways. A football game asks a child to run, slow down, turn and kick. Catching asks them to watch a ball, move into position and time their hands. These skills need opportunities to develop. A child can have good endurance and still need practice with balance or coordination. That is why a programme should look beyond how long children can keep moving.
What parents can look for
Watch what happens during a session. Are children participating often or waiting in long queues? Does the coach simplify a task when someone struggles? Can children try again? Progress can be small and meaningful. A child may stop with more control, catch from a short distance or feel ready to join a group game. These changes deserve attention alongside speed and endurance.
Movement beyond the class
Families have different spaces and schedules. Some children play outdoors daily; others move mostly during organised sessions. Both can benefit from varied experiences. Rolling a ball, dancing, walking and simple chasing games all create opportunities. A class can add guidance without replacing everyday play.
Our approach at Athletots
If a child spends time with us, I want our coaches to notice what they learned and what challenge should come next. Physical development should include understanding and confidence. Explore Athletots Striders for movement and sports programmes in Pashan, Pune.
Parent questions
Is movement education only for children who struggle with sport? No. Beginners and confident children can both practise a wider range of skills. The challenge should fit the child.
How is it different from exercise?
Exercise develops physical qualities. Movement education also focuses on how a child performs and adapts a movement. A good session can include both.
